Albion Rovers v St Mirren: It's time to start turning good displays into wins, says Darren Young

DARREN YOUNG insists Albion Rovers have to start turning decent displays into winning performances, writes Joseph James.

The Coatbridge men were on course to give League One title hopefuls Alloa Athletic a bloody nose last weekend.

But a defensive collapse at the Exsel Group Stadium saw the Wasps maintain their perfect start to the season.

That meant another dose of frustration for player/manager Young who feels his side deserve better.

With there being so many matches remaining in the campaign, Young made it clear that there is no need to worry.

And he hopes today’s IRN-BRU Cup Third Round clash with Championship St Mirren (kick-off 3pm) can launch the club’s season.

“It was another frustrating performance for us,” said the 37-year-old. “Up until they scored, I felt we were probably the better team.

“We missed a gilt-edged chance to take a deserved lead and within a couple of minutes we were 1-0 down due to a deflection.”

He added: “We need to keep our heads up. We have not received the rewards that our performances have deserved so far.

“Some of the football has been magnificent this season. All it takes is a wee bit of luck and things will change for us.”

League One Rovers have been dealt a cruel early-season blow with Ross Davidson, Ryan Wallace and new signing Kevin McCann all laid up in the treatment room.

On-loan Hamilton Accies forward Steven Boyd is ineligible to face the Buddies having already played for his parent club in the IRN-BRU Cup.

Kids from Brian Kerr’s Under-20s squad are currently making up the numbers with the situation far from ideal for Young.

He added: “Having so many key players out injured is really hard for us, especially when we have such a small squad as it is.”
