An Irvine jewellery designer has been nominated for a prestigious industry award.

Sheila Kerr, whose business is located in the town’s harbourside, is in the running for a ‘Designer of the Year’ gong in the National Association of Jewellers Awards.

Sheila joins five other jewellers in the finals, but she is hoping to come out on top at the glitzy ceremony in Birmingham.

The former lecturer in business management attended her local college to learn silversmithing several years ago.

And what started as a hobby soon became a full time business when Sheila opened the Harbour Street shop in April 2008.

Sheila, who lives in Prestwick, has created many Robert Burns inspired products including a range called ‘Ae Fond Kisss’ and ‘My Luv Is’ which includes earrings, bracelets, pennants and bangles.

Delighted Sheila said: “I’m quite a small business in comparison to some of other names that are in the final six, so it’s a victory in itself just to have made the shortlist.

“It’s quite a prestigious award for me personally as it let’s me know that what I’m doing here is being recognised and appreciated by those in the industry.

“I think it’s great for Irvine, and Ayrshire and Scotland in general because I am the only one north of the border that has made the public vote.

“I would love it if people could support me by voting in the public vote online, where they can select me in the ‘Designer of the Year’ category.”

The winner will be announced on Thursday, December 1, at St John’s Hotel, Birmingham.
