Old football rivalries were renewed when Mauchline took on Germany at football.

The match between Mauchline United and Bleu Gelb Alleringerslebin, a team from Germany, was a re-run of the local team’s trip across the Channel two years ago.

Alleringerslebin are a team from a small village, population 400, in the former East Germany.

The Ayrshire side were 15-1 winners on the day, on a day when the result was merely incidental.

Jim Todd, provost of East Ayrshire, welcomed the teams to Beechgrove Park while Fiona Lees, the CEO, made the closing speech and presentation of trophies.

He said: “It was an honour to open an International Football match at the Beechgrove Park between Mauchline United and their German friends from Alleringesleben.

“The two football clubs have shown great community spirit throughout their sporting relationship to enable these matches to take place and be hosted both in Germany and Mauchline.”

The following day, the team visited Hampden and Dumfries House followed by a Scottish night at Mauchline Bowling Club where they enjoyed traditional Scottish food, saw Highland dancing and watched some of Tam o’Shanter being acted out.
