At least four people have been injured after being stabbed in Frankfurt and the perpetrator is now on the run, say police.

According to local radio station FFH, the motive is not yet clear.

A message on Frankfurt police’s Twitter feed read: There was a knife assault at the #Hauptwache in #Frankfurt. That’s why so many colleagues [police officers] and rescue workers there.”

All four victims have been taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The incident occurred at the B-level of the Hauptwache train station in the centre of Frankfurt.

Photographs taken at the scene showed pools of blood on the floor along with scattered personal belongings.

However, Frankfurt police looked to reassure the public by tweeting: “If we recognised a threat to the local population we would communicate this.”

The stabbings will still raise fears the attack was terror-related after a string of incidents across Europe over recent months.
