Robbie Neilson's MK Dons defeat bitter rivals AFC Wimbledon as former Hearts gaffer gets first win

Robbie Neilson has won his first match in charge of MK Dons.

The former Hearts gaffer led his team to a 1-0 home victory over rivals AFC Wimbledon, with a second half penalty from Dean Bowditch the difference between the teams.

Neilson has had a mixed start to his coaching career down south. In his first outing in the MK dons dugout, the ex-Jambo manager earned a plausible 0-0 draw away to Charlton in the FA Cup.

In his second match, The Dons were on the wrong end of a 4-1 hammering at the hands of Yeovil Town.

But following today’s League One match against AFC Wimbledon, Neilson has first points on the board.

The two teams met for the first ever time in the league, in what is one of the more bizarre football rivalries.

In 2004, MK Dons effectively replaced Wimbledon FC, with the entity being re-located from London to Milton Keynes and having it’s named changed to MK Dons.

In protest, fans of Wimbledon clubbed together to start a new phoenix club – AFC Wimbledon – which has seen a rapid from the Combined Counties League to English League One in just six seasons.

And the team made history just last month, leapfrogging MK Dons in the league, for the first time in their 12 year history.
