Midge Ure appeared on national television last week to speak about his time living in Cambuslang.

The Ultravox singer was on BBC’s The One Show, visiting the areas he grew up in, and heading back to Stonelaw High, which he attended when it was Rutherglen Academy.

During the piece, Midge spoke about the role the town had played in he rise to stardom. He even said he would return to the town to remind himself of how lucky he was to be living his dream.

He visited the site of the tenement flat where he grew up, which is now the car park outside Farmfoods behind the Main Street.

He said: “The tenements may have looked grim, but we were a community. I lived round the corner from my gran and two aunts . As you were out playing, she would be hanging out the top floor of this tenement flat and she would make you up this piece and jam, stick it inside a paper bag, tie it up, wrap the ends and throw it out the window.”

Midge explained that changes in and around the town meant his family moved to a home in Buckingham Drive in Eastfield, somewhere he described as a “like a palace”.

He was already dreaming of a life in music at this point, and he learned to play guitar in the Stonelaw folk club.

Of his time at the then Rutherglen Academy, he added: “I never felt comfortable in places like this, in halls like this.

“I didn’t quite fit academia, it had no interest to me so I immersed myself in music.”

Midge also explained why he does not use his given name, Jim.

He changed it while a member of Glasgow band the Salvation, and said: “Jim [bandmate, Jim McGinley] said ‘you are Jim Ure’ and I said, yeah, and he said ‘well I am Jim McGinley.

“And we can’t have two Jim’s so, as it’s my band and I am older, you’re now Midge’.

“He said it was ‘Jim’ spelled backwards.”
