Mill homes Currie favour with families in character-filled development

INSPIRED by the architecture behind the buildings at an old paper mill in Edinburgh suburb Currie, CALA have created a unique collection of homes that pay homage to the original character and layout of the site.

The result is a charming collection of properties ranging from three- bedroom semis to five-bedroom detached houses set along the Water of Leith.

Two new townhouse styles have been created especially for Kinleith Mill, attracting the attention not only of buyers but also CALA regional staff around the UK.

The three-bedroom, end-terraced Bowater, priced at £495,000, is bound to appeal to young families and couples thanks to its quirky layout and distinctive character.

A self-contained open-plan living, dining and family space to the back of the house gives buyers flexibility and there is also a study and cloakroom with storage space on the ground floor.

The second floor has a large lounge with an extended area to the side that some residents are using for a bar. Across the hallway is a master bedroom with built-in wardrobe space and an ensuite bathroom.

The third floor is ideal for a teenager or guest with two bedrooms, a bathroom and, unusually, a laundry – the architects having given thought to the fact most items we wash day-to-day belong upstairs.

The homes are built in a mix of red multi-brick with tumbled edges and white render, with dark grey roofing, nicely blending traditional and modern design.

CALA East sales and marketing manager Alison Cunningham said: “The materials used for the homes and the style of the buildings are in keeping with the history of the site.”

The development is positioned off Lanark Road West but residents cross a bridge then wind down a lane to reach the site which gives it a rural feel despite being close to the shops and schools of Currie.

The stunning five-bedroom Henry house type 9 is priced at £659,000.

It features an extensive open-plan kitchen, dining and family space to the back of the home with ceiling stretching the full height of the property and double skylights that create a bright, airy feel.

There is a utility room, lounge and large study that could be used as a games room or additional living space, while upstairs there are five bedrooms, a family bathroom and two en suites.

Now in its second phase, building is under way to extend the number of detached homes, with many of the semi-detached and mid-terraced homes now complete.
