NHS Lothian say it has "robust security" to deal with cyber attacks

NHS bosses have promised the health board is well equipped to deal with any future cyber attacks.

NHS Lothian said it has “robust security” in place to deal with any more threats, following the attack that crippled health boards around the country.

While NHS Lothian escaped unscathed, 11 health boards in Scotland – including NHS Fife and NHS Borders – were targeted, as was the Scottish Ambulance service. NHS Lanarkshire closed non-essential networked IT systems on a temporary basis.

While all sites remained open they did ask members of the public only to attend hospital for emergency treatment.

Tracey Gillies, Medical Director, NHS Lothian said: “We have robust security systems in place to protect our IT and regularly update with the latest software to ensure they remain safe.”

NHS services across England and Scotland were hit by a global ransom attack on Friday.

Some hospitals and GPs in England were unable to access patient data after their computers were locked by a ransomware programme demanding a payment of £230.

There were fears of a second wave of attacks, but so far these have been unfounded.
