A member of an American Navy SEAL skydiving group was killed in a parachuting accident while performing in an aerial exhibition as part of the annual Fleet Week festival in New York Harbor.
The skydiver, whose identity was being withheld pending notification of relatives, plunged to his death when his parachute failed to open properly, Rear Admiral Jack Scorby told reporters outside the New Jersey hospital where the man was pronounced dead.
An image from the scene shows a parachute in a New Jersey parking lot.
It is believed the parachutist realised his chute would not open properly and detached it in a bid to land in the Hudson River.
His body was later recovered from the river.
