Major incident in Amsterdam after 'car ploughs into crowd of people' at train station

Five people have been injured in Amsterdam after a car ploughed into pedestrians at at the city’s central train station.

Photos and video posted online show victims being treated as they lay on the floor and several ambulances and police cars at the scene.

The driver of the car has been arrested and is being interrogated by police.

The incident happened at about 9pm local time after the car drove into an area where vehicles are not allowed and attempted to flee as they were approached by police.

After ploughing into pedestrians the car smashed into a concrete barrier and came to a stop.

The driver was arrested by police and taken to a station for questioning as officers searched the car.

Police said two of the victims were taken to hospital for treatment while the other three were treated by paramedics at the scene.

One witness wrote on Twitter: “Someone just ran into 10 people near Amsterdam Central Station, exactly where my exchange group was.

“Who would have known what could have happened if we decided to show up a few minutes later.”

The station remained open following the incident, although an entrance near the crash site was closed.

Tram traffic resumed about an hour later.
