CAPE TOWN – The Western Cape Human Settlements Division says the Nationwide Division of Public Works has began a strategy of transferring a bit of its land in Grabouw to the Theewaterskloof Municipality.
This week, the Elgin city was marred by violent protests stemming from land evictions.
In March, residents erected almost a 1,000 shacks on land owned by the Public Works Division.
Human Settlements MEC Bonginkosi Madikizela earlier this week met with Public Works Minister Thulas Nxesi and Theewaterskloof Mayor Chris Punt.
Madikizela says as soon as the land is handed over to the municipality a course of will probably be adopted to nominate beneficiaries.
“That doesn’t essentially imply that the people who find themselves now residing there can be prioritised. Due processes should be adopted.”
