THE Twilight Sad can’t wait to play this weekend’s Electric Fields festival – after two months touring Europe and the US with rock legends The Cure.

The Cure’s frontman Robert Smith is a huge fan of the trio and even covered the band’s song There’s a Girl in the Corner before inviting the Scottish indie outfit to go on the road.

“It was the best two months of my life,” The Twilight Sad’s frontman James Graham said.

“To be asked by your favourite band to support them on their world tour is something you dream about and something I never thought would happen.

“I feel very privileged to have been able to watch them play every night and to have shared the stage with one of the greatest bands of all time.

“We were treated so well and Robert was so kind to us. He wants our music to be heard by as many people as possible.

“It’s an amazing feeling when someone you look up to so much believes in what we’re doing.

“Playing our music in some of the most iconic venues in the world was pretty surreal.

“It’s pretty funny to think that a band from Kilsyth played three nights at The Hollywood Bowl and three nights at Madison Square Garden.”

The shows were a remarkable turnaround for a group who were recently considering quitting.

James said: “Before our last album was released we were really struggling for many reasons. Being able to be in this band full-time is all we want.

“Luckily for us, our last album was received very well and reached many new listeners.

“We now have a group of people working with us who care and believe in what we are doing and that has made a huge difference. An endorsement from one of the best bands of all time and Robert covering There’s a Girl in the Corner also helped.

“I think we’re just getting started and have a lot more to say within our music.”

The Twilight Sad – James, Andy MacFarlane (guitar) and Mark Devine (drums) – are performing at Electric Fields.

James said: “It’s our last Scottish gig of the year. We haven’t played at home since supporting our friends Chvrches at the Hydro at the start of the year and before that it was our headline gig at Barrowland, which was a very special night.

“Andy and I went to the festival last year and played a surprise acoustic set.

“We played mid-afternoon so we spent the day there.

“We got drunk, watched bands and spent time with our friends.

“That’s what all good festivals should be about.

“It’s a really nice setting for a festival as well.”
