Two West Lothian schools have been given a national award in recognition of their efforts to support and encourage cycling to school.

The James Young High School in Livingston and Armadale Academy have been awarded Cycle Friendly Secondary School status by Cycling Scotland.

The two schools are the first secondary schools in West Lothian to receive the award after implementing a number of cycle initiatives recognised by Cycle Scotland.

Matt Wilberton, Cycling Scotland development officer, said: “It’s been great working with staff and students at James Young High School and Armadale Academy and I congratulate them both on becoming the first Cycle Friendly Secondary Schools in West Lothian.

“Both schools have demonstrated a real commitment to getting more people cycling to and from school.

“Cycling is a sociable and healthy way to travel and Cycling Scotland is delighted that the staff, students and volunteers have embraced cycling in such a positive way.”

The James Young High School has created cycle champions who provide information on local cycling networks and have also built a new bike shelter.

Staff at the school participated in the West Lothian Cycle Challenge last year and the school cycling club, staff and pupils supported Cycling Scotland’s Give Everyone Cycle Space campaign.

Armadale Academy introduced a student bike club and are piloting the Level 2 SQA Cycle Safety and Bike Maintenance Award with a group of students.

Both schools have applied for funding from Cycling Scotland to continue and expand their work in school.

Tom Conn, Executive councillor for the environment, said: “I’d like to thank both schools for all their hard work in helping to promote cycling. Pupils and staff at both schools should all be very proud of their work.

“More West Lothian secondary schools are in the application process, and we hope these first awards inspire more schools to take part. The initiative supports the council’s Active Travel Plan for West Lothian which aims to mainstream walking and cycling for everyday journeys.”
